Pinhole Press Personalized Memory Game

Little G has aunts and uncles scattered all over the Midwest and down south. I have been trying to come up with a creative way for her to learn about her family when she can not see them everyday. This personalized memory game would be perfect! The memory cards are from Pinhole Press found via A Cup of Jo and pinned onto my DIY Projects & Crafts board. Love these!

Use Instagram Filters Without Sharing

Before my daughter, I would pull out my fancy Canon Rebel or Canon point n shoot, stage my shots, wait for the perfect light and shoot beautiful pictures. Then I would take them into Photoshop and manipulate them into small works of art to share with all of you.

Then I had a baby. Now I scramble for my iPhone and Instagram blurry legs and arms and hope I captured something that makes sense. However, I do not necessarily want to publish those shots right away. I want to use the Instagram filters to jazz them up to my design standards, but hold on to them until I decide if they will stay personal or make their way onto the blog.

I knew there had to be a way to access the Instagram filters, but not "share" the photos. I googled it and found a super simple tutorial for the answer. (For iPhone)

Simple Steps:

1. Go to Settings on iphone - Turn ON Airplane Mode. Turns off the wifi and disables Internet access.

2. Open Instagram - take or choose an existing picture. Crop picture. Choose filter.

3. Save by hitting Next in top right corner. 

4. Choose Share in the top right corner. It will NOT publish.

5. Instagram will save your filtered photo in your Photos folder. It will say "Failed" and a delete photo X option. Click the X to delete the photo.

6. Go to Settings turn the Airplane Mode back OFF. 

7. Then I just email myself the photo and upload away in my blog post...between diaper changes and naps.

Gianna Moonbug Photography Photoshoot

We recently had the privilege and honor of having our little Gianna photographed by the talented Sonja Clark of Moonbug Photography. {you may remember the branding project I did for her.} Funny, this was a couple of weeks ago and G has already grown so much! {2 month shots yesterday. Big girl}

We are close friends with the Clarks and Sonja was there for me all through my pregnancy. She has posted some snapshots of our petite over on her blog and I will be sharing some of my favorites in the coming month. If you are in the Indianapolis area and need any pregnancy, newborn, childrens, senior or family pictures, you should give her a call. She has an amazing gift to capture a person's soul and spirit. It is all in the eyes! Thanks again Sonja!

HUGE Ikea Wall Art

I knew it when I saw it. I had to have it! On a recent Ikea trip to look for nursery items, I turned the corner and there it was. The PREMIÄR. A HUGE image of a wave printed on canvas. HUGE! The husband and I have been searching for a large piece of ocean themed art to fill our large master bedroom walls. Eureka! I am obsessed with the ocean and have been in the process of transforming our master into an ocean retreat. These were our original ocean master bedroom/bathroom mood boards. We will definitely share pictures when we are finished. Ahh, I can hear the waves crashing right now...

Favorite iPhone App: Instagram

Instagram is a great free photography iphone app for sharing photos immediately on Twitter, Facebook and Flickr. It features cool, scroll through photo filters to add that extra touch {see them along the bottom!}. I was dragging my feet about sharing personal photos on Twitter, but I changed my mind after I found this app!

OMG! Someone give me a food packaging project right now! Please! I stumbled onto food photographer Matthew Klein on Pinterest and I am blown away. Stunning. The detail he captures is remarkable. Matthew specializes in food photography for advertising and packaging. {ps these popsicles would be so great for a summer party. So visual and healthy!}

You betcha I'm on Pinterest! From the Pinterest website, "Pinterest is a social catalog service. Think of it as a virtual pinboard — a place where you can post collections of things you love, and "follow" collections created by people with great taste." This site is has come in pretty handy for creating design moodboards for clients. I have used it a couple of times already.

Le Dolce Vita Patisserie Grand Opening Date

I am so excited to announce that my client, Le Dolce Vita Patisserie, has set their store Grand Opening date. The store, located in Zionsville Indiana, will open Saturday, January 29th. I am so honored to have been part of the process and I have seen sneak peeks of the store along the way. I have also had the opportunity to test many of the sweet treats! Yum! Kelly and her team have done an amazing job and I wish them all the best! Stop in for some coffee, donuts and pastries!

Happy 2011

Hello and happy new year everyone! I am sitting on a train commuting into Chicago and will be for the next three months. I am contracted for some onsite freelance work. My posts might be a little crazy for a bit until I figure out my new schedule. Please hang with me!

As I am sure you have noticed on all the blogs, people are declaring their new years resolutions, life lists and personal and professional goals for 2011. I am mulling mine over and reviewing last years. Things definitely need to change up a bit around here. I will be sharing mine very soon.

To combat any homesick issues, I bought a new vegetarian cookbook and I will be working my way through it and sharing all my new favorite recipes. I am also determined to fall in love with Chicago again. I am going out to explore the winter windy city, shooting pictures, documenting my adventures and sharing them all. Take a Chi-town trip with me!

Coolest Dog Gift Ever

It's official! I have the coolest uncle EVER! One of my uncles, the graphic designer {business and Etsy}, made and mailed Daisy the COOLEST freakin' thing I have ever seen. Let me set the stage. Me depressed over Daisy's eye surgery. Uncles massive dog lovers. Me crying to them at Thanksgiving. Uncle had some time to kill in Minneapolis blizzard. Me opening special delivery package. Me screaming and calling them smiling in fits of laughter. Finally, someone brought some positive to this extreme negative! Voila! Daisy's new designer beaded eye patch!

I LOVE skull and cross bones {especially like Paul Frank}. As soon as the stitches come out and it is safe, I will take some pictures of Daisy sporting her new patch. Thanks UJ! You ROCK! Much love.

Much love to you all! You have left me the kindest comments and emails and ALL of them have helped my husband and I through this dog stuff. It was nice to hear about all of your pets and their struggles and triumphs. Helped us to remember her strength and to know that she too will get through this! ~ erin

I am loving the photography app Plastic Bullet by Red Giant Software. I stumbled onto this on the Eight Hour Day blog. Katie Kirk was gracious enough to share her secret app for her stunning photos. RUN DON'T WALK PEOPLE! Ez, of Creature Comforts blogging fame, has just released the first issue of Gifted Magazine and it is eye candy galore! Vale Design Work :: Moonbug Photography Blog Design Revisions

One of my freelance clients, photographer Sonja Clark of Moonbug Photography, was happy with the blog she had designed and set-up, but she was looking for that little something extra. We had a quick brainstorming session on strengthening the look of her brand, visual organization and legibility. Then I went to work!

I designed a new blog header showcasing her logo {with its sparkly new ® registration! Congrats!} and used the bug as a subliminal arrow to help move the viewer across the top of the site and down the right side to the newly created quick buttons. The side buttons emphasize the brand color and utilize the playful lightening bug graphic to highlight main information. Make sure to check out the reference section with Sonja's helpful hints when preparing yourself or your family for a professional photoshoot. Pop over to check out the new design!

Recipes and gorgeous food photography...two things I absolutely love! {ps I love their logo too} Sunday Suppers is a beautiful site run by stylist and wedding and food photographer Karen Mordechai and Lizzy Sall. The Decision

You may have noticed that I have been absent here on Fridays. I have been busy working on some personal and professional design projects. I have also been participating in life! I am taking walks through art museum gardens with my mom {pictures above}, re-introducing myself to Indianapolis and spending quality time with friends and family. I realized that I do not miss my little corner of the internet one little bit on Fridays! So, I have come to a decision. I do not plan to have anymore Friday posts. Some may sneak in here and there, but for the most part I will be using that time for design and growth for Vale Design, finch&hawk and myself. I have been a fan of the Pioneer Woman website, run by Ree Drummond, every since I stumbled onto it looking for Photoshop actions a couple of years ago. Ree's personality and voice are quite funny and her life sounds so interesting. This site is heavy with Cooking and Photography {beautiful photos + tutorials + great tips + actions} with a little Home & Garden and Homeschooling mixed in! I recently stumbled onto fresh365. This site is a collection of vegetarian recipes, gorgeous food photography and general photography. This site is also run by a designer named Erin, but a Boston based one! I am always looking for more vegetarian recipes to add to my arsenal and I love shots of fresh vegetables. The colors are so beautiful. {found via Mint}

Blog Love: Bakerella

Ahh the super sweet goodness of Bakerella! I first found this site through Kathleen at Twig and Thistle. If you have a sweet tooth, love design, branding and beautiful stunning food photography, than this site is for you! Cakes, pies, cupcakes, cute little baking projects, holiday and wedding projects and recipes are illustrated step by step through some seriously amazing food photography. You will wish you could reach through the screen!

I am always fascinated by photography and styling tricks, especially food shots. They are SO difficult. There are some great photography tips on this site. If you have some time, definitely pop over and wander around. I am sure there will be some amazing holiday projects, recipes and photos coming up!

My new Canon Rebel

I did it. I pulled the trigger! I am the proud new {and terrified} parent to this Canon Rebel XSi. I am so excited about the possibilities with this thing! Just think about how amazing my product photography will look. I am very grateful that I have a professional photographer as a close friend though. This baby may require a few quick lessons!

Landor, Sterling Brands, Hornall Anderson Blogs oh my

It seems like everyone and their mother has a blog now-a-days, myself included. It is how and what you choose to do with your blog that sets you apart from others. I choose to use mine as the face of my freelance design business...with maybe a picture of my office dog or two! However, even the big design guys are getting into blogging. As a freelancer, I am always interested in setting my personal design bar very high. I measure what I release to my clients against what I envision that the "Top" design companies would release to theirs. I always wonder, "What would they do? How would they go about this project? What was their thinking behind this design?" Now I can be privy to that knowledge! Landor, Sterling Brands, and Hornall Anderson {to name a few} have blogs. What an amazing opportunity for the rest of us to learn from their knowledge and experience. I also follow Landor and Sterling Brands on Twitter. To these "Top" companies, thank you for opening the doors, sharing and pushing the rest of us to work harder and design better!

Vale Design Work: Moonbug Photography

I was honored when owner/photographer Sonja Clark chose Vale Design to help her update her company name and look from Bella Vita Images to Moonbug Photography. Sonja is an amazing person and outstanding photographer. She is calm, kind and has a unique gift for capturing a person's spirit.

She specializes in family, seniors, newborns, and birth photography. She is currently prepping to shoot school photos for a number of Indianapolis schools. These are not your run of the mill school photos with the goofy back drops and that plastic comb for your hair. She will be shooting over a couple of days and all the shots of the kids will be candids! How cool is that for a parent?! Examples of her school photography can be seen on her newly updated site. {Personally, her child shots are my favorites. Look at all their eyes. Beautiful!}  She is also working on her blog. This will showcase additional photo shoot images, personal photography and some tips here and there. Check back often! 

I designed an extensive logo exploration, seen here, and once branded we rolled the design onto a print promotion piece, business card design, gift certificate, watermark, website and blog. Soon we will be exploring some packaging options for her final photo deliveries.

Sonja is booking up very quickly, so please check her site and blog for her contact and availability. She is talented and someone I am honored to call friend and creative confidant.

Shutterfly 20x30 prints

Did you take the best digital picture on vacation? Or even just in your backyard? Want to blow it up REAL big? Personally, I use Shutterfly to print our digital pictures. Their site is easy, I can upload straight from iPhoto on my mac, and they can even send my regular sized pictures to the Target near my house in an hour.

Now, if you do not know this about me, I am obsessed with the ocean. I like my bathing suit, sunglasses, a good book and that sound that only the ocean makes. I have been hunting for large ocean pictures for years, but I have never found one I loved and they can be very expensive when they are large. When we returned from Mexico this past December, I had some amazing photos of the ocean.  While uploading them, I noticed that Shutterfly had a 20"x30" print option. That's huge! Being a designer, I wondered how they would hold the resolution from a tiny digital picture to be that large. They only offer matte prints in this size and they give you the option to move the crop of the printable area. Each print was only $22.99 + shipping so I ordered two ocean pictures that my husband and I loved. I figured if it did not look nice, it was not that expensive of a mistake. It arrived fairly quickly in a protected cardboard tube. When I opened the package and laid the photos out...OMG! Beautiful. Held the color. Held the resolution. Now we have gorgeous giant ocean photos that we took ourselves. The framing cost is what is going to get me now! Have a great weekend everyone! More photography today. And this one is pretty unbelievable. Zara Jennings found via Darling Dexter. All I am going to say is the kid is 16. I can say kid because I am twice her age. If this is not natural talent, then I am not sure what is. More amazing shots on her Flickr and her blog. Inspires me to want to go out and try harder.

I feel like I have been obsessed with photography lately. I am working on shooting some personal work and I have been wandering to the ends of the internet to find tips, styles and compositions that I like. Today, I found it. {insert the choir singing} Weathered.

All of these amazing shots were taken by one photographer, Susannah Conway. She currently lives in Bath, England. The name of her site is Unravelling and her story is touching.
